The Theory Of Abstract Light

This is a side project from 5ive’s Ben Carr that is described as “an interpretation of depression falling into madness”. All of the tracks (seven are printed on the package, but nine appear on the CD itself) consist solely of various guitar riffs, tones, and textures, and the result is pretty interesting, not to mention diverse. From acoustic guitars and ambient hums to doom-laden crunches, sinister drones, and twisted feedback… it’s all here. And the tracks range in length from a mere two minutes to nearly 20! So there are definitely a lot of doors being opened and explored.

Russian Circles - Geneva (2009)

Russian Circles is a three piece instrumental post-metal/post-rock band from Chicago. Similar to fellow Chicago residents Pelican, Russian Circles play epic, sprawling music which runs the gamut of heavy discordant metal to soft delicate passages. They are also known for their energetic live shows, which include tours with Tool, Red Sparowes, Minus the Bear and Daughters, as well as appearances at the 2006, 2007 & 2008 SXSW festivals.Formed in late 2004 by guitarist Mike Sullivan and bassist Colin DeKuiper (both formerly of another instrumental band Dakota/Dakota), they quickly recruited Dave Turncrantz, formerly of St. Louis band Riddle of Steel. In 2007 DeKuiper departed the band and Brian Cook (These Arms Are Snakes and Botch) took on the role of bass player for the writing and recording of their newest album, entitled ‘Station,’ recorded in Seattle with Producer Matt Bayles. Station was released on May the 6th, 2008 on Suicide Squeeze Records.Cook does tour with Russian Circles on bass when the timing does not interfere with his own band These Arms Are Snakes.

Russian Circles announced a new album entitled ‘Geneva’ which is scheduled to be released on October 20th, 2009. The album will feature the same lineup as Station, with Brian Cook reportedly taking a much larger role in the writing and creation of the album. Brian Cook describes the band’s take on the new album being “less concerned with making sure we could replicate the material live as we were with making a compelling album.”

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert is a three-piece instrumental band from Seattle, WA. The band originally formed as a two-piece in early 2005 by Brandon Salter and Brian Woods. Their first recordings were nothing more than bass, guitar, some effects, a drum machine, and a tape 4-track recorder. These demos attracted both local and out of state attention. After only playing a handful of local shows they were invited on tour by Boulder, Colorado’s Strangers Die Every Day. After returning from tour, Brandon and Brian decided they needed a live drummer to complete their sound. Local drummer Michael Clark filled the position in the fall of 2006.

You.May.Die.In.The.Desert have a hard-working DIY ethic that works well for them. They have completed three west coast tours and this past summer had the opportunity to tour Japan. Their most recent EP, Bears in the Yukon (Zankyo Records, Japan), has been selling rapidly and gaining the attention of local, national, and international fans and critics. After doing everything on their own for the past two years they have finally found some small independent USA labels that are helping them to release records. They have a split record coming out on Differential Records in January, 2008 and Bears in the Yukon should see an official USA release in the next few months. Following the release of these records they plan on touring extensively.

From Monument to Masses

A revolutionary listening experience, From Monument to Masses is the moniker of the politically astute post-rock trio from the San Fransisco Bay Area. The group came together in late 2000 when Matthew Solberg (guitarist/vocalist/programmer) and Francis Choung (vocalist/percussionist/drummer) met through an online message board for local musicians. The two began playing together and connected with Sergio Robledo-Moderazo (bassist/keyboardist/programmer/vocalist) who also had connections with Steve Aoki who was the main frontman of Dim Mak records - the record label they would sign to shortly after. Instead of searching for a lead vocalist, the band decided to implement samples of various media sources into their music showcasing the members’ political and social concerns with the modern world. Combining the fluid arrangements and structures of post-rock (one thinks of a more upbeat Mogwai or Godspeed You! Black Emperor), along with the standard principles of post-hardcore, the band has gained critical acclaim for their approach to instrumental rock. The band is still currently signed to Dim Mak records. The follow up to 2003’s groundbreaking The Impossible Leap in One Hundred Simple Steps was a album containing covers and different version of their songs, as well as two new tracks, titled Schools of Thought Contend. For the next four years From Monument to Masses toured massively, throughout America, Europe and Asia. In 2009 they released Beyond God and Elvis as a single, and in March released On Little Known Frequencies. The band will be touring soon to promote this album.

My Humble Opinion

Remarkably, this band doesn't have a vocalist. They use samples from movies, TV programs, commercials and political debates, which sounds pretty nice reminding me of my favourite Maybeshewill's album Japanese Spy Transcript. All in all according to the texts and their own words FMTM are quite politically oriented and hope to change the world around with their music. I don't know if they have succeed but the sound is pretty nice.

Caspian - Tertia (2009)

When drowning in the appropriate sound, you find yourself achieving the same fundamental effects in your soul as coming up for air has on the body. Caspian is that appropriate sound. An instumental rock band from Beverly, Massachusetts formed in Autumn of 2003, these four young men have crafted a sound that is immediately riveting, emotionally devastating, and achingly passionate. Characterized by towering walls of sound, oceanic guitar work and vicious rythymic elements, Caspian is a band that knows how to imbed itself within the part of you that refuses to easily surrender. Take a walk around the bands home co-ordinates and you might find some clues. Tan stretches of sand and the infinite blue horizon of the Atlantic might be bigger influences here than anything else. The jam packed seasonal cycle might explain the bands desire to cover everything from gentle and placid to furious and destructive, all while maintaining a unified musical sensibility, and a fierce sense of adventure . Live in an area like this and you're bound to create something hopeful, inspiring and downright massive. Caspian wants to bring you to places like this and to places we all havent seen yet. Let them take you.

A. Armada

Instrumental post-rock from Athens, GA. Shares members with Cinemechanica and Maserati.

On Anam Cara, the bands first proper record, A. Armada weaves its sound through ringing guitars dipped in echo and a rhythm section that serves more as propellant than mere support. The pieces shift from somber genteelness to intense consideration to soft cradling. This isn’t music to conquer the world by; this is music to conquer oneself with. But if you ask the band about this they’ll probably give you a blank stare. And that’s, really, the whole point. In making music for themselves they’ve inadvertently made it for you.
A. Armada distinguishes itself from its peers by possessing an intangible Southernism which renders its intensity more introspective than bombastic.
-Gordon Lamb, Flagpole Magazine

Athens, Georgia has given birth to its newest musical prodigies, A. Armada. The instrumental quartet uses an incendiary marriage of weaving guitars and pounding drums to create their brand of music.

The Tumbled Sea

The Tumbled Sea is a one man project by Sam Lee from Boston, Massachusetts. The Tumbled Sea was once Mr.Mumbles, and sometimes still is. Sam Lee started writing music being still a high school student. Recording in his living room, he employed a medley of musical instruments including guitars, pianos, synthesizers and various toy instruments. The first album came out unsigned although some handmade cds were distributed among friends. The second album Melody/Summer came out in 2009 on Futurerecords music label.

My Humble Opinion
